FAQ
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of removing a tree stump by using a specialized machine that grinds the wood down below ground level. This leaves the area ready for grassing, landscaping, fencing or planting. The roots are usually left underground to naturally decay over time, with additional grinding available where required for your plans.
How deep do you grind?
Most stumps are ground 150 to 300 mm below ground level as standard. This is deep enough for turf, gardens and most landscaping. If you need deeper grinding for construction or concrete, just let me know and I can allow for that in the quote.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Pricing depends on several factors including:
Stump size and type
Number of stumps
Access to the site
Ground conditions and surrounding obstacles
I operate with a minimum charge of $250 + GST to cover travel, setup, and machine running costs. Beyond this, I provide clear, upfront pricing after assessing the job. You will know the full cost before any work begins, and there are no hidden fees.
Do you remove the grindings?
The grindings are left on site as they can be used as mulch or to backfill the hole.
Can you grind stumps in tight access areas?
Yes. My machine is designed to access most residential backyards, lifestyle blocks and farm sites. If access looks tricky, you can send me a photo and I will let you know what is possible before booking the job.
Is stump grinding messy?
Like any earthworks, stump grinding creates wood chips and soil movement, but I take care to keep the site tidy and controlled. I always aim to leave your property clean and safe once the job is finished.
How long does it take?
Most single stumps take between 30 and 90 minutes depending on size, hardness and access. Multiple stumps or large rural jobs may take several hours or a full day.
Do I need to be home while the work is done?
Not always. As long as I can access the stump safely and there are no specific instructions, many customers are happy for the job to be done while they are out. Payment can be arranged after completion.
What areas do you service?
I service all of North Canterbury including Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Amberley, Balcairn, Leithfield, Waikari, Hawarden, Cheviot, Culverden, Oxford and surrounding rural areas.
Can you grind stumps near buildings, fences or services?
Yes, in most cases. I take extra care when working near structures, fences, retaining walls and underground services. If you are unsure where services are located, it is important to let me know before work begins.
Do you offer discounts for multiple stumps?
Yes. When multiple stumps are on the same site, the overall price per stump is usually lower. This is often the most cost-effective way to remove several stumps at once.
What types of customers do you work with?
I work with homeowners, farmers, lifestyle block owners, landscapers, builders and property managers across North Canterbury and the Hurunui District.
How do I get a quote?
You can contact me by phone, text or through the website. Photos are often enough to provide an accurate estimate. For larger or more complex jobs, a site visit may be arranged.
